Plot Summary

Luck is one of Apple TV Plus’ new animated movies in 2022. This fantasy comedy film tells the story of a young orphan named Sam Greenfield, who has experienced bad luck all her life. Sam, an 18-year-old girl, has grown up in the care system, being moved from one foster home to another. She has spent her recent years at the Summerland Home for Girls, under the supervision of a dedicated social worker.

The plot gains momentum as Sam is about to move into a new house and start living independently. After finding a lucky penny on the sidewalk, Sam’s luck suddenly turns around, and everything goes her way.

When she discovers the penny belongs to a lucky black cat, Sam follows him through a secret portal and finds herself in the mystical Land of Luck, a place where the forces of good luck and bad luck secretly affect people’s everyday lives. In this world, magical creatures control the balance of luck in humans’ lives.

In this Land of Luck Sam uncovers her own unique connection to the ancient battle between good luck and bad luck organizations. The film follows Sam’s journey to unite with magical creatures like Babe the Giant Pink Dragon.

Sam isn’t greedy, but she does want her lucky coin to turn her luck around and forge her destiny. Chasing her lost lucky coin, Sam finds there is bad blood in the land of luck. When bad luck takes over the land Sam’s mission pivots to re-engaging the balance between good and bad luck.

“Luck” showcases the themes of courage, friendship, and the power of self-belief. The narrative of an orphan seeking her forever family takes on a magical twist as Sam learns that her circumstances have not defined her or her worth.

Interestingly, “Luck” is not a Disney film but rather a production by Skydance Animation, with John Lasseter, the former Pixar Animation chief, serving as head of animation and a producer on the project. The film is available for streaming on Apple TV+.
