Every princess has a story, and The Walt Disney Company put Andy Mooney in charge of uniting Disney princesses from hit Disney movie animation films into the Princess Line.
Andy combined heroines from various Disney animation franchises and one from the acquired Pixar animation company. Merida, from the Disney Pixar film Brave, joins the group as the only Pixar princess.
Inspiration struck Andy in the spring of 2000 after attending a Disney on Ice performance. What stood out more than the ice skating spectacle was the fan’s love of their favorite Disney princesses.
Many of the girls in attendance were dressed up in their favorite homemade princess costumes, and this is the switch that led to Andy’s light bulb moment and put into motion the Disney Princess films movement.
The original Disney princesses included Snow White, Cinderella, Aurora, Ariel, Belle, Jasmine, Pocahontas, Mulan, and Tinkerbell. After a quick pivot from this official Disney princess list, Tinkerbell was removed to embark on her journey headlining the Disney Faries franchise.
With an empty roster spot to fill, Disney quickly diversified their princess list by adding Tiana on March 14, 2010. Later Rapunzel was added as the tenth member on October 2, 2011.
Disney officially broke the mold on May 11, 2013, by adding a Pixar princess, Merida, from the animated movie Brave as the eleventh Disney Princess.
Most recently, Moana was added as the twelfth Disney Princess in 2019. There was no public announcement for Moana’s addition; however, she was still branded and merchandised as a Disney princess.

Live-Action Disney Princesses
Disney is bringing their princess line to life in full-length feature films. You may have seen some already like Maleficent, Maleficent 2, Cinderella, Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin, and Mulan.
Aurora is the first Disney princess to have a live-action movie called Maleficent and Maleficent 2. Although Disney did not name the film Sleeping Beauty after the original animated movie, it is still considered a spin-off from the original Disney film.
In the film, Aurora is secretly cursed by Maleficent when she is a young girl and unknowingly grows up to become fond of Maleficent and creates a close bond.
Similar to Sleeping Beauty, Aurora is hypnotized and pricks her finger, falling into an eternal sleep. However, in the live-action version, the young Prince’s kiss was not enough to save her. Instead, the evil fairy Maleficent kisses her forehead and wakes her up.
In the second Maleficent film, Aurora and Phillip are to be wed. This time the other side of the family, Phillip’s mother, is plotting to kill Maleficent and all the other fairies at the wedding.
Aurora and Maleficent intervene, and the wedding goes on as planned. Aurora marries Prince Phillip, and his mother is turned into a goat.
Cinderella is the second Disney Princess live-action film and stayed close to the original animated story of Cinderella. Some of the character’s dress colors and hair changed, and it turned out just as magical as the original.
Cinderella’s father doesn’t live long after he remarries. Thinking her set Cinderella up with a caring stepmother and stepsisters, they move in with Cinderella, and then everything takes a turn for the worst.
Cinderella’s new stepfamily begins to show their true colors, and it is not pretty. She is made the housemaid, and life becomes very challenging and unfair.
Cinderella continues to remind herself of her mother’s words, “have courage and be kind.” No matter how hard she tries, the Tremaine’s become more mean every day.
Many hard-earned days later, the glass slipper fits, and Cinderella finally gets her chance to shine, becoming the princess she was always destined to be.
Belle is the third Disney princess to appear in her live-action remake of the original Beauty and the Beast. The film does an excellent job of sticking to the original animated film.
Belle is considered by many in her village to be a little girl, odd and goofy. She loves to read books and innovate. She looks at life from a different angle and often finds beauty in unlikely places.
One day her dad doesn’t come home. She sets out to find him and finds him locked away. Taking his place, she frees him, and Belle is now held prisoner by a giant beast.
As time passes, Belle is surprised to discover this particular house is full of magic and wonder. The furniture moves and talks with her, and she soon makes new friends.
Belle also gets to know the Beast and finds that he is misunderstood. Belle’s curiosity and unique way of looking at the world help her build a connection with the Beast that will later save his life.
Jasmine is the fourth Disney princess to get a live-action remake, and this time, Disney stays some from the original animated movie. There were new songs and new character personalities in the Aladdin remake, such as Iago and the Sultan not being as funny or jolly.
A poor boy named Alladin unknowingly saves the princess in the town marketplace where they first meet. Later Aladdin sneaks into the palace to see Jasmine and is caught leaving by Jafar and his guards.
Jafar convinces Aladdin to enter the Cave of Wonders and retrieve the lamp, but he gets trapped inside. Rubbing the lamp, he accidentally releases the Genie, who grants him three wishes.
Aladdin and Genie become friends and work together to impress Princess Jasmine. Soon, Jafar becomes wise to Aladdin’s new power and takes the Genie for himself.
Jafar takes the sultans power and continues to spend his wishes becoming more and more powerful. Aladdin realizes that Jafar only wants power and baits him into wishing to be a genie knowing he would be a slave to the lamp and thus going away into hiding.
Aladdin follows through with his promise to Genie and uses his final wish for Genie’s freedom. Jasmine and Aladdin live happily ever after ruling Agrabah.
Mulan is the fifth Disney princess to get a live-action remake and most recent addition which also had some differences from the original animated film. Mulan’s loveable cricket friend and the dragon Mushu were nowhere to be found. Instead, Mulan was guided by a mysterious Pheonix that appeared at pivotal moments.
The Emperor’s lands are under increased attacks, and an army needs to be raised to protect the surrounding communities. Each family is to contribute a male to enlist in the army and serve the Emperor.
Mulan steps in to take her hobbled father’s place without the family’s permission, and she goes to war. Mulan’s bravery is more remarkable than her male counterparts, and she saves all of their lives by burying the enemy in an avalanche.
Mulan’s instincts continue to lead her to lead the army to the Emperor’s palace, where he is in grave danger. Mulan saves the Emperor’s life, and her family is bestowed with great honor for her brave heroics.
