As Harold is just about to sign the contract, a page rushes in and announces that Princess Fiona has been saved. Now, in the present, Rumpelstiltskin is still feeling resentment and wishes that Shrek had never been born. He plots his revenge.

As time passes, Shrek is becoming tired and bored with his quiet life. He wants to go back to when he was an ogre that people were scared of. Things come to a head at his children’s first birthday party.

With all the villagers and their fairy tale friends attending, everything is annoying Shrek. Letting out a huge roar, he smashes the birthday cake and storms off.

Outside, he tries to tell Fiona how he feels and how he misses his ogre-scaring days before rescuing her. Fiona realizes she can’t talk sense to him at this moment and goes back to join the party. All of this is witnessed by Rumpelstiltskin, who begins to plan his revenge.

Rumpelstiltskin tricks Shrek into accompanying him for a meal and offers Shrek a deal. He can become an Ogre for a Day so long as one day from his childhood is erased.

Shrek readily agrees and signs the contract. Shrek finds himself in a world where he is frightening again though he discovers that his home has gone and Donkey doesn’t know him.

He is captured by witches and put in a caged carriage that Donkey pulls and arrives at the castle. He finds Rumpelstiltskin is now king and controls the land with his witches.

He recognizes now he has been tricked. It was the day he was born that has been erased, and by the end of the day, he will cease to exist. Angry, Shrek breaks free of his bindings and tussles with the witches but grabs one of their broomsticks.

He snatches Donkey and flies through one of the windows pulling with him a giant encrusted ball that gets damaged as it gets stuck in the window.

They fly to the safety of the forest, where Shrek tries to convince Donkey to trust him, but he is scared of the ogre and runs away. Shrek finds a child’s toy ogre and, feeling thoroughly dejected, begins to cry.

Donkey comes back and asks him why he is crying. Shrek explains the devious trick Rumpelstiltskin has played on him and the contract he has signed to make it real. They check the contract he signed and find the clause to break it – love’s true kiss.

They go back to the castle to find Fiona but discover she is leading the ogre resistance to fight back against Rumpelstiltskin. Shrek doesn’t know how to make Fiona love him again.

He enters her tent, where he finds Puss in Boots, retired and fat and now Fiona’s pet. Shrek tries to give her gifts and woo her, but she orders him out.

Donkey tells him that Fiona only cares about the cause, so Shrek wins her friendship by showing how good a fighter he is, but this is not enough to win her affection. Puss in Boots tells him he must tell her something only her true love would know.

Rumpelstiltskin hires the Pied Piper to capture everyone and leaves the castle with the witches. Before the ogres begin the attack, Shrek tells Fiona about her curse.

This distracts her enough that the signal to attack is lost, and the ogres launch the attack by themselves. With no coordinated plan, the attack fails.

The Pied Piper captures all the ogres and brings them back to the castle. Fiona is very angry with Shrek and kisses him to prove she doesn’t love him.

At the castle, Pied Piper informs Rumpelstiltskin that Shrek and Fiona are together. Fearing that they might kiss and break the contract, he announces to all the land, via mirrors everywhere, that anyone who captures Shrek will be given a reward, and he will grant all their wishes.

Shrek goes there to sign this contract to set all the ogres free though this is a trick. Fiona is a prisoner there too, and so both are trapped. Donkey tells the ogres of his plan to attack by entering the same way they left.

Rumpelstiltskin wants to execute Fiona and Shrek by using the Dragon, though it is interrupted by Donkey and Puss, along with the ogres who emerge out of the giant ball.

While the ogres battle the witches, Shrek and Fiona can subdue the Dragon, who Donkey is trying to woo and capture Rumpelstiltskin before he tries to escape.

Fiona tells him they make a good team, but he is beginning to disappear. Shrek tells her of their daughter, Felicia, and he is happy that he could love her again.

Fiona says that she always dreamed of having a daughter with that name. Just before he completely disappears, she kisses him, nullifying the contract and returning the world to normal.

Shrek finds himself back at the birthday party just as he roars. He now has a newfound joy in his life and friends. He tells Fiona that she was the one who saved him.
