Hotel Transylvania 2 Plot Summary
Mavis and Jonathan get married after Johnny is accepted by the monster guests and Dracula at Hotel Transylvania during Mavis’ 118th birthday celebration.
Mavis and Jonathan’s love has brought significant changes between the world of humans and the world of monsters. The adventures of Johnny in the world of monsters have magnified as he witnesses the abilities of monsters, this time involving his son.
After Dracula’s acceptance of Johnny, Mavis announces that she is pregnant a year later after they get married. She gives birth to Dennis. Dennis and Wayne’s werewolf daughter, Winnie, became close friends.
Dracula realizes the dominant human abilities of his grandson, and on his fifth birthday, Dennis has yet to have grown his fangs. Dracula becomes concerned that Dennis may not have any vampire powers at all.
Mavis believes that raising Dennis in Transylvania involves many dangers for the half-human half-vampire kid. She decides it is best to raise Dennis, where Jonathan grew up.
Her decision is a huge surprise to Dracula, and he strongly disapproves. Dracula wants Dennis to become one of the vampires and follow his steps as count. The tug of war could disrupt Dracula’s expectation that his grandson will become as powerful and able as their ancestors.
Later, Dracula persuades Johnny to bring Mavis to California and introduce her to his family despite Johnny’s lack of interest to leave Hotel Transylvania.
Dracula hopes to distract Mavis from arranging to move away from the hotel and do other things outside without their son. The plan is to leave Dennis with Dracula while the couple is away.
This alone time allows Dracula to train Dennis to become a monster. Dracula asks for help from his friends, Frankenstein, Wayne, Griffin the Invisible Man, Murray the Mummy, and Bobby the Blob, to accomplish this task.
As soon as Johnny and Mavis leave for California, Dracula takes Dennis to a summer camp to learn to hone his vampire and monster abilities.
Dracula finds out that the camp is no longer as dangerous as during his first visit upon arriving at the camp. In his desperation, Dracula hurls Dennis into a tall tower.
He drops Dennis to force him to turn into his bat form and fly away, but he quickly discovers that the child has no signs of becoming a bat. He immediately chases after him and rescues him from landing on the ground.
Surprisingly, some campers filmed the incident and uploaded it on the internet. The video reached Mavis and filled her with anger. Mavis tries to return to Transylvania quickly.
Unfortunately, no flights are available to Transylvania, so Mavis decides to fly to Transylvania in her bat form, carrying Johnny on her back.
Upon returning to Hotel Transylvania, Mavis scolds Dracula for endangering Dennis by pressuring him to develop vampire abilities. As soon as Dracula’s friends reach Hotel Transylvania several minutes after Mavis scolded Dracula, they promise to leave Hotel Transylvania right after Dennis’ fifth birthday.
Mavis decides to invite Vlad, Dracula’s father, to Dennis’ birthday party. Vlad has deeper anger for humans compared to Dracula as he wants to steal the souls of humans.
Dracula advises Johnny to have the human guests disguise as monsters to protect themselves from Vlad’s possible attack. Vlad arrives at the party with his bat-like servant, Bela, and tries to scare his grandson off as he thinks it could force Dennis’ fangs to come out.
With a cute party costume, Dennis did not grow any fangs. Vlad grows furious and continues to scare the child. Dracula shields Dennis from Vlad and finally exposes the deception about his grandson’s origins.
Vlad bursts in anger as he knows that human guests are accepted into Hotel Transylvania and Mavis’ connection with a human. Dracula confronts Vlad about the humans’ interaction with monsters being hopeful in the current times.
Vlad is overwhelmed with confusing emotions and acts unapologetically in great disbelief. After the unpleasant circumstance, Mavis is angered by how her father behaved and treated the party.
The family fights and argues, leaving Dennis sad and flees the hotel a few moments later. Dennis, together with Winnie, enter the forest in the nearby premises of Hotel Transylvania to escape from the chaotic events inside the hotel.
They enter inside a treehouse, not knowing Bela follows them. Bela attacks Winnie and Dennis leaving Winnie injured. This attack greatly angered Dennis, causing his fangs to grow instantly, leading him to manifest his vampire and monster abilities.
Without fear or second thoughts, Dennis starts to fight Bela, and Bela starts to call his giant bat minions to help him attack Dennis. Dracula, Mavis, and the monsters join Dennis fighting Bela’s bat minions.
The fight continues, and Dracula’s family and Dennis soon defeat Bela’s pack. In Bela’s despair, he tries to attack Johnny for revenge.
Vlad appears with a changed heart and rescues Johnny from the attack of his bat-like servant, Bela. He shrinks Bela into a tiny creature, and Wayne’s werewolf children drive him away.
The family finds happiness in Dennis’s transformation and display of his vampire powers. Mavis finally decides to continue raising her son in Transylvania with Dracula, Vlad, and her father’s monster friends.
They return to the Hotel and happily resume the party.
Hotel Transylvania 2 defines the deep bonding of monsters and humans through the union of Mavis and Johnny. Vlad’s acceptance of humans further emphasizes the story’s unity and acceptance between humans and monsters.
Hotel Transylvania 2 surpasses the Hotel Transylvania (2012), where Dracula built the hotel exclusively for monsters. Hotel Transylvania 2 emphasized the values of forgiveness and acceptance.
