Easy, mom. It’s only been a few weeks!
It’s almost like stealing people’s data and giving it to a hyper-intelligent AI as part of an unregulated tech monopoly was a bad thing.

The Mitchells vs. The Machines Plot
The Mitchell family – Rick, Linda, and their two kids, Katie and Aaron live in Kentwood, Michigan. Katie is an aspiring filmmaker and has just been accepted by a Californian film school. But her quirky personality clashes with her father’s, who is technophobe and nature-obsessed.
The night before she is due to fly to California, she fights with her father about a short film she has made. During the argument, Rick accidentally breaks her laptop.
Rick and Linda worry that the family’s bond might be frayed, so Rick decides that they need to do one last family bonding activity before Katie leaves for school.
He cancels her plane ticket and organizes a road trip for everyone to travel to California. Rick and his wife, Linda, Katie, and her younger brother, Aaron, and their pet pug, Monchi, all get in the car and head west.
Meanwhile, in Silicon Valley, the technology entrepreneur Mark Bowman unveils a new line of home robots that will replace his brilliant AI PAL as she is now obsolete.
PAL doesn’t take kindly to Bowman’s new plan. She takes over Mark’s company and reprograms all the robots worldwide to take all humans captive and launch them into space!
At a road stop cafe in Kansas, the Mitchells are almost caught. Inside the cafe, Rick thinks the family should stay put for their safety, but Katie thinks they should try and save the world and compels her father to agree.
They befriend two robots that tried to capture them but were defective, Eric and Deborahbot 5000. The robots tell them that they can use a kill code to shut down PAL and stop all the other robots.
The Mitchells make their way to a nearby mall and try to upload the kill code though PAL has ordered all PAL chip-enabled appliances to stop them at all costs.
As Katie is about to upload it, they are attacked by a giant Furby who pursues them around the mall. They manage to trap and destroy the Furby, but not before it destroys the PAL router.
The destroyed router disables all the army of appliances from working though it also prevents them from uploading the kill code.
They must drive directly to where PAL is to stop her. On the drive to Silicon Valley, Linda reveals to Katie that, years ago, she and Rick had lived in a cabin in the mountains as this was his lifelong dream though he would give it all up.
Upon reaching Silicon Valley, the Mitchells gain access to the PAL Lab HQ by disguising themselves as robots. But PAL tries to manipulate the family by showing surveillance footage from the cafe.
Katie is shown telling Aaron, secretly, that she was only pretending to have faith in Rick so that he would take them to where they could upload the kill code.
The Mitchells fail in their attempt to enter PAL’s lair, and the PAL MAX Prime robots capture Rick and Linda. PAL then reprograms Eric and Deborahbot so they will now obey her.
Katie, Aaron, and Monchi flee the HQ and hide from the robots. Whilst in hiding, she discovers some of Rick’s old home movies on her camera. Watching them, she realizes that her father had given up on his lifelong dream to care for his daughter.
Spurred on to save her parents, she and Aaron infiltrate the PAL Labs again by using Monchi as a distraction. While it seems his appearance causes a malfunction in their programming.
Rick and Linda free themselves after getting help from Mark. They devise a plan to short-circuit the robots by uploading one of Katie’s home movies of her and Monchi. But when Rick is about to upload the movie, he is outnumbered by the robots. Eventually, Katie and Aaron are captured, as well.
After being caught, they are brought in front of PAL. Katie has to justify the salvation of the human race. She explains that no matter how hard her family struggles, they will always stay connected despite their differences. But PAL is not impressed and ignores this reasoning, dropping Katie out of her lair.
Eric and Deborahbot are so impressed by Rick’s ability to reprogram and use a computer. The two robots revert to their original defective selves and upload Katie’s movie.
The film saves her and the rest of the family too. They now band together to fight the rest of the remaining robots. Linda leads this charge and destroys dozens of them by herself.
Katie finds and destroys PAL by dropping her into a glass of water. PAL short-circuits in the water, freeing all the humans and disabling all the robots except Eric and Deborahbot.
A few months later, the Mitchells finally arrived at Katie’s college, where she and her father shared one last heartfelt goodbye.
They will experience one more road trip as Katie joins her family, along with both of the robots, Eric and Deborahbot. They head to Washington, D.C., where they will be awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor.
